I want to take this time to welcome you to the Alice Police Officers Association new website. I ask for your patience as we are still learning how to use the site. To give you some background on the association the Alice Police Officers Association was created in 2007 by our great citizens of Alice. It was placed on the ballot and our great citizens elected to have Civil Service implemented.
Civil Service is a chapter found in the Texas Local Government Code. It basically give cities a set of guidelines for Police and Fire. We must adhere to the same guidelines. The main reason for Civil Service was in order to protect officers that were being unjustly punished and targeted by administration. Collective bargaining came the next election and again our great citizens stood behind us and elected to grant us Collective Bargaining.
Collective Bargaining simply gives us the right to sit and bargain with the City for certain rights and privileges. It was never the intention of this association to use either of the two for financial benefit. It was put in place to protect officers and have in place a fair and mutual contract that would benefit both parties.
The Association is comprised of members that are all employed by the City of Alice Police Department as police officers. Although we work for the Alice Police Department the department and Alice Police Officers Association are two different entities. It is the goal of the Association to give back to our community. They have given us so much so our plan is to be there for them. Some of our projects, Shop With a Cop, Toy Drive, Back to School Bash, Merchant Bash, National night out, sport team sponsorship, sponsoring other project are just a few of our past projects. With your help and cooperation we wish to continue building on this and continue our support to our community.
To correct a few misconceptions Civil Service and Collective Bargaining were never meant to financially benefit anyone. As stated before they were meant and are used to protect the right of our members. Only the second of our two contracts with the City have ever addressed monetary issues. These were only introduced after the oil boom created a lack of applicants. It took officers and applicants so in order to combat that problem and make our department more attractive we attached incentives to encourage a larger pool of applicants.
We look forward to continue building our relationship with our community. Our motto, Unity, Strength and Perseverance are three things that I believe are crucial building blocks to teamwork. With Unity, being united creates Strength, with strength and unity, it will allow us to Persevere through whatever the future may hold for us.
